The Impact of COVID 19 on Education

Impact of COVID 19

Earthquakes are devastating and cause countless losses, but the threat is not over when they pass. The aftershocks of these seismic tremors are equally, if not more, devastating than the earthquake itself. A Similar analogy can be used to describe the impact of covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic wreaked havoc throughout the world, but it can be deduced that the impacts are far from over. We have seen these after effects of the pandemic on the global economy. The increase in demand resulting in shortages and the subsequent increase in the commodity prices is one of the aftereffects of this pandemic.

Impact of COVID 19 on Education

One of the sectors that has suffered due to this pandemic is the educational sector. To be able to fully grasp the impact this pandemic had on education, we draw a comparison between education before the pandemic hit and how it has morphed the education after the pandemic slowly and gradually eases down. In Pakistan, the education system was far from perfect before the pandemic hit, but the pandemic has certainly left a lasting mark on the education system. The children were used to a routine, where they had to sit in a class for a specific period, but with the shift towards unchartered territory; the online education has affected their attention span. The education in covid-19 lockdown period heavily relied on the students learning for themselves, which did not yield any positive results.

There is a contrast to the amount of effort exerted by the students in online class and physical class, with the restrictions easing down the former is seen in physical classes as well. The entire concept of getting by with minimum effort is evident in the attitude of the students, a thing which they had experienced in online education, where the teachers were more than lenient with their marking of projects and exams.

Impact of COVID 19 on Economy

A further impact is seen on the underprivileged. The overall inflation in the economy has resulted in HEC’s budget being cut, which has led to the fees being increased. The underprivileged who suffered during the pandemic for not having access to a stable internet connection have to now bear the increase in fees of schools and universities. If the genuine concern and the impact the covid-19 has left on the education is not rectified, the education system will continue to suffer in Pakistan, leading to further disparity in the Quality of education received by the youth.
