The Curious Case of the Single National Curriculum

The Single National Curriculum was introduced by the former Prime Minister Imran Khan in 2020, with the intention of creating a single unit. This adoption was to be adopted across all levels of education throughout the country, starting from the primary level. The main objective of launching the single national Curriculum or the SNC was to provide quality education throughout the country. This would have introduced a single syllabus across the levels of education in the country; the religious institutes, public schools, and the elite English medium schools.

Cons of Single National Curriculum

In theory, this seems like a step in the right direction. There is a prevalent disparity between the types and quality of the education that is being received by the children. It is only the actual material of the course that can help us to truly understand if adopting this course will be beneficial for the students in the long run. For the syllabus to be beneficial, it must be up to date and must have the strength to compete with the educational level in the Western part of the world. If it is not up to the standard it should be, it will be rejected by those who can afford better education for their children and would further add to the existing disparity, a concern raised by Imran Khan during the launching ceremony of the SNC.

The syllabus of the SNC shows that all of the subjects will be in the Urdu language, a step that further increases the disparity between the students of Pakistan and the global students. This is further added to by the grammatical errors that can be found in the local textbooks. There is potential to create a religious divide as well because the chapters start with Bismillah, which would have been no issue if all the students were Muslims. This takes away from the identity of the students who are from minority communities and it no longer becomes a syllabus for all, which it was meant to be.

Pros of Single National Curriculum

If a single curriculum is to be introduced across the country, it must be better than what is already being offered. This will attract people from all backgrounds to advocate to their schools and colleges to adopt that curriculum. Thus, similar education will be delivered across the country without any compromise on the quality of the education being delivered.
