MDCAT Guidelines

The National Medical and Dental College Admission Test or the MDCAT is a college admission test that is conducted once a year and is required for admission to medical and dental colleges in Pakistan. It is a highly competitive test with 200,000 candidates appearing in the test every year according to the PMC. It is a computer-based test focusing on the following sections; Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, and logical reasoning. The test results are displayed on the candidate’s computer screen after they finish the exam. The MDCAT consists of 220 mcq-based questions The time allotted for the completion of the test is three hours and thirty minutes. Students from pre-medical backgrounds and having a minimum of 60% in Intermediate are eligible to apply for the MDCAT. The exams are conducted by Pakistan Medical Commission three to four months after the Fsc exams.

MDCAT Registration

The registrations for MDCAT start in late May and close in early July with the test date being in the month of September. The paper pattern of PMC MDCAT is 68 MCQs from biology, 56 MCQs from chemistry, 56 MCQs from Physics, 20 MCQs from English, and 10 logical reasoning MCQs. The total marks for the MDCAT test are 210. The passing percentage for the MDCAT test is 55% marks. The general method of merit calculation for the university/college application is 10% marks in matric, 40% marks in Intermediate, and 50% marks in the MDCAT. 

One of the new additions to the test is the logical reasoning portion. The logical reasoning portion is an intelligence-based portion that does not require prior knowledge by the candidate. Similar to a standard IQ test, it relies on the general knowledge of the candidate. 

MDCAT Criteria

Private colleges and universities have the liberty of making their own merit criteria based on the result of the test. These can be checked by visiting the official site of the university to which the candidate is interested in applying. Registrations for the MDCAT can be made online by visiting the PMC website and the registration fee for the test is Rs 6000.
