Full text of Standard form: IGCSE Maths worksheet with answers

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 (Extended). Standard form is how very large and very small numbers are written so that they are easy to compare and calculate with. Read the notes, then work through the 24 questions. Full working is given in the answers at the end.

What you need to know

Definition. A number is in standard form when it is written as a × 10n, where 1 ≤ a < 10 and n is an integer (a positive or negative whole number, or zero).

So 3.2 × 105 is in standard form, but 32 × 104 and 0.32 × 106 are not.

Writing large numbers in standard form

Move the decimal point until there is exactly one non-zero digit in front of it. The number of places you moved it is the power of 10, and for a number bigger than 10 the power is positive.

  • 4 560 000 = 4.56 × 106 (the point moved 6 places to the left)
  • 93 000 = 9.3 × 104

Writing small numbers in standard form

For a number between 0 and 1, move the point to the right until it sits just after the first non-zero digit. The power of 10 is negative.

  • 0.000 072 = 7.2 × 10-5 (the point moved 5 places to the right)
  • 0.0031 = 3.1 × 10-3

Converting back to an ordinary number

A positive power moves the point to the right, filling the gaps with zeros; a negative power moves it to the left.

  • 3.1 × 104 = 31 000
  • 2.5 × 10-3 = 0.0025

Multiplying and dividing

Deal with the front numbers and the powers of 10 separately. Multiply or divide the front numbers, and use the index laws for the powers: add them when multiplying, subtract them when dividing. Then check that the front number is still between 1 and 10 and adjust it if not.

  • (4 × 103) × (5 × 106) = 20 × 109 = 2 × 1010
  • (3 × 102) ÷ (6 × 105) = 0.5 × 10-3 = 5 × 10-4

Take care with negative powers: 103 × 10-5 = 10-2, but 103 ÷ 10-5 = 103 - (-5) = 108.

Adding and subtracting

You can only add or subtract the front numbers when the powers of 10 are the same. If they differ, rewrite one number with the other's power (usually the larger), add or subtract, then put the answer back into standard form.

  • 3.2 × 105 + 4.1 × 104 = 3.2 × 105 + 0.41 × 105 = 3.61 × 105

Using a calculator

Scientific calculators have a key marked ×10x or EXP. To enter 3.2 × 105, press 3.2, then that key, then 5. Do not type the × and the 10 yourself, or the order of operations goes wrong. Put each number inside brackets when you divide. A display of 1.6E4 means 1.6 × 104; write the answer out properly on paper.

Rounding to significant figures

The first significant figure is the first non-zero digit. In standard form the front number already starts with it, so round the front number and keep the power of 10. Unless told otherwise, give non-exact answers to 3 significant figures.

  • 3.456 × 107 to 2 significant figures is 3.5 × 107
  • 9.96 × 103 to 2 significant figures is 10.0 × 103, which must be rewritten as 1.0 × 104

Worked example 1. Without a calculator, work out (6.4 × 105) × (2.5 × 10-2), giving your answer in standard form.

Front numbers: 6.4 × 2.5 = 16. Powers: 105 × 10-2 = 103.

So the product is 16 × 103. This is not in standard form because 16 is bigger than 10, so write 16 as 1.6 × 101: 16 × 103 = 1.6 × 101 × 103 = 1.6 × 104.

Worked example 2. Work out 7.5 × 10-3 - 9 × 10-4, giving your answer in standard form.

The powers are different, so rewrite the second number with the power 10-3: 9 × 10-4 = 0.9 × 10-3. Now subtract the front numbers: 7.5 - 0.9 = 6.6.

Answer: 6.6 × 10-3. Check with ordinary numbers: 0.0075 - 0.0009 = 0.0066.

Exam tip. An answer such as 36.1 × 104 scores the method marks but loses the final mark: check that the front number is at least 1 and less than 10. In word problems, make the units match before you calculate.

Worksheet

Give every answer in standard form unless the question says otherwise. Marks are in square brackets. Questions 7 to 14 are non-calculator; show your working.

Answers

1. (a) 5.3 × 105 (point moves 5 places). (b) 8.1 × 10-4 (point moves 4 places to the right). (c) 2.03 × 107.

2. (a) 4.7 × 103 = 4700. (b) 9.02 × 10-5 = 0.000 090 2. (c) 1.5 × 108 = 150 000 000.

3. (a) No, 12 is not less than 10: 1.2 × 104. (b) No, 0.4 is less than 1: 4 × 10-3. (c) Yes: 7 is between 1 and 10 and 0 is an integer (the number is simply 7). (d) Yes.

4. (a) 45.6 = 4.56 × 101, so 45.6 × 104 = 4.56 × 105. (b) 0.0072 = 7.2 × 10-3, so 0.0072 × 10-3 = 7.2 × 10-6.

5. (a) 7.384 915 × 106; the fourth significant figure is 4, so round down: 7.38 × 106. (b) 6.0985 × 10-5; the fourth significant figure is 8, so round up: 6.10 × 10-5. Keep the zero, because 6.1 × 10-5 shows only 2 significant figures.

6. Compare the powers first (the 10-4 numbers are smaller than the 10-3 numbers), then the front numbers within each power. Order: 4.1 × 10-4, 9.8 × 10-4, 1.02 × 10-3, 3.9 × 10-3.

7. 3 × 2 = 6 and 104 × 107 = 1011. Answer 6 × 1011.

8. 4.5 × 6 = 27 and 106 × 10-2 = 104. This gives 27 × 104, which is 2.7 × 105 in standard form.

9. 8.4 ÷ 4 = 2.1 and 109 ÷ 103 = 106. Answer 2.1 × 106.

10. 2.4 ÷ 8 = 0.3 and 10-3 ÷ 102 = 10-5. This gives 0.3 × 10-5, which is 3 × 10-6 in standard form.

11. Make the powers the same: 8.3 × 103 = 0.83 × 104. Then 5.6 + 0.83 = 6.43, so the answer is 6.43 × 104. Check: 56 000 + 8300 = 64 300.

12. 6.5 × 10-3 = 0.65 × 10-2. Then 9.1 - 0.65 = 8.45, so the answer is 8.45 × 10-2.

13. 52 × (10-3)2 = 25 × 10-6 = 2.5 × 10-5.

14. Rewrite with an even power: 1.6 × 107 = 16 × 106. The square root of 16 is 4 and the square root of 106 is 103. Answer 4 × 103.

15. One hour is 3600 s = 3.6 × 103 s. Distance = speed × time = 3 × 108 × 3.6 × 103 = 10.8 × 1011 = 1.08 × 1012 m.

16. Time = distance ÷ speed = (1.5 × 1011) ÷ (3 × 108) = 0.5 × 103 = 500 s = 8 minutes 20 seconds.

17. 2 hours = 120 minutes = 6 periods of 20 minutes, so the number doubles 6 times: 26 = 64. Number = 4 × 105 × 64 = 256 × 105 = 2.56 × 107.

18. Match the units first: 1 cm = 1 × 10-2 m. Number of cells = (1 × 10-2) ÷ (7.5 × 10-6) = (1 ÷ 7.5) × 104 = 0.1333... × 104 = 1333.3... Answer 1.33 × 103 cells.

19. (2.4 × 108) ÷ (8.1 × 109) = (2.4 ÷ 8.1) × 10-1 = 0.2963... × 10-1 = 0.029 63... Multiply by 100: 2.963...%, which is 2.96% to 3 significant figures.

20. Front numbers: 1.67 × 6 = 10.02. Powers: 10-27 × 1023 = 10-4. Mass = 10.02 × 10-4 kg = 1.002 × 10-3 kg = 1.00 × 10-3 kg to 3 significant figures (about 1 gram).

21. (2 × 1012) ÷ (4.5 × 106) = (2 ÷ 4.5) × 106 = 0.4444... × 106 = 444 444.4... (a) The drive cannot hold part of a photograph, so round down: 444 444 photographs. (b) 4.44 × 105.

22. (3 × 10-4) ÷ (1.2 × 10-7) = (3 ÷ 1.2) × 10-4 - (-7) = 2.5 × 103. The grain of sand is 2500 times longer.

23. (a) Write the Moon's mass with the power 1024: 7.35 × 1022 = 0.0735 × 1024. Total = 5.97 + 0.0735 = 6.0435, so the total mass is 6.04 × 1024 kg to 3 significant figures. (b) (5.97 × 1024) ÷ (7.35 × 1022) = (5.97 ÷ 7.35) × 102 = 0.8122... × 102 = 81.22... The Earth is 81.2 times heavier than the Moon.

24. (a) Volume = (2.5 × 10-3)3 = 15.625 × 10-9 = 1.5625 × 10-8 m3. (b) Mass = density × volume = 8.9 × 103 × 1.5625 × 10-8 = 13.906 25 × 10-5 kg = 1.39 × 10-4 kg to 3 significant figures (about 0.14 g). (c) Number of cubes = 1 ÷ (1.390 625 × 10-4) = 0.7191... × 104 = 7191.0..., which is 7.19 × 103 cubes. Use the unrounded mass from (b); 1.39 × 10-4 gives 7194, which rounds the same.
